About the Role

Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, performs specific clerical functions and non-professional services necessary to maintain efficient and effective operations of the nursing unit or department, consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures of the nursing department and hospital administration.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates patient record preparation and maintenance for accuracy and completeness, including assembling admission records, patient records, and printing labels and ID bands.
  • Ensures accurate and complete processing and maintenance of electronic medical records (EMR), including entering and updating patient information.
  • Prepares patient records for discharge and/or transfer, including copying paperwork, chart breakdown, and contacting appropriate departments.
  • Ensures accurate, timely, and professional communication via phone, messages, and interactions with patients and physicians, and schedules post-discharge follow-up appointments.
  • Facilitates efficient patient flow using electronic capacity management and bed management systems, ensuring current and accurate clinical attributes.
  • Organizes and prioritizes workload to complete responsibilities within the assigned shift, updates the primary nursing board, initiates/updates census sheets, and maintains a neat work area and nurses' station.
  • Floats to other units to provide assistance and accepts additional assignments as requested to support department efficiency.
  • Remains current in clerical practices, programs, and procedures utilized by the department, and attends mandatory in-services.
  • Assists with chart audits, maintaining informational bulletin boards, ordering and maintaining unit supplies in a cost-effective manner, and other non-clinical activities under leadership guidance.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must be able to demonstrate correct use of chemicals, supplies, and tools needed to accomplish tasks after training.
  • Basic understanding of office equipment.
  • General knowledge of simple medical procedures or terminology.
  • Some knowledge of health care facility cleaning is preferred.
  • Manual skills, motor coordination, and finger dexterity are required.
  • May exert up to 10 lbs. force.
