About the Role
This role involves training other Package Handlers on essential techniques for efficient and safe package movement, while also performing physical package handling duties.
Responsibilities
- Trains new Package Handlers (PHs) on effective unloading, loading, palletizing, carrying, smalls handling, SWAK, and non-conveyable package handling techniques.
- Provides training to other PHs needing additional instruction on package handling techniques as determined by management.
- Provides feedback on proper package handling techniques.
- Reinforces dock safety standards among peer PHs.
- Demonstrates understanding and execution of all necessary processes and procedures.
- Updates managers on sort conditions to aid operational efficiency decisions.
- Assists in implementing new package handling procedures and techniques.
- Loads/unloads, palletizes, lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls packages while training others.
- Utilizes hand-to-surface methods for all package handling.
- Loads and unloads packages onto or from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor system carts, and load gratings.
- Lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls packages on a continuous and repetitive basis for shifts of approximately 3-5 hours, potentially working multiple shifts daily.
- Determines the appropriate conveyor system by scanning packages, reading labels and charts, verifying numbers, and memorizing information to sort packages.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be able to lift and carry between 10 and 50 pounds.
- PHs operating switching equipment must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) file.
Skills
- Ability to train multiple peer PHs simultaneously.
- Ability to understand and follow instruction regarding work duties and safety methods.
- Ability to discern numbers and information to sort packages correctly.
- Ability to use basic tools and equipment such as skate wheel rollers, dock carts, hand-held scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment.
