About the Role

The Peer Specialist engages participants in peer-based services to identify and overcome barriers to treatment engagement and community integration. This role supports client linkage and engagement with onsite and community providers, ensuring adequate support networks. The Peer Specialist utilizes a peer relationship to foster connection, trust, understanding, and validation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual sessions with clients to address issues such as substance abuse, mental health treatment, family and social relationships, stress and symptom management, activities of daily living, medication management, and independent living or supported housing.
  • Offer emotional and practical support to clients during treatment.
  • Cultivate and maintain cooperative relationships with the multidisciplinary team and community providers.
  • Advocate for clients to achieve personal goals and overcome barriers like stigma and communication disparities.
  • Participate in weekly interdisciplinary team meetings and supervisory sessions.
  • Collaborate with clients and the multidisciplinary team to achieve treatment plan goals.
  • Monitor and document client progress, adjusting plans as needed.
  • Complete all required in-service training and staff development.
  • Document and track resources and client progress.
  • Meet all deadlines for progress/informational notes in the electronic health record, fidelity reports, and other documentation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use personal story and role model recovery to promote growth and empowerment.
  • Knowledge of behavioral health systems, substance use disorders legislation and regulations, and health conditions.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and seek assistance when needed.
  • Ability to participate effectively in a team.
  • Serve as a role model to clients, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work with all stakeholders (clients, providers, families) in a caring, respectful manner, with cultural understanding.
  • Knowledge of treatment, rehabilitation, and community support programs.
  • Knowledge of techniques for identifying risk for relapse, risk of harm to self/others, including crisis management.
  • Must be able to document notes in electronic health record.
  • Must be proficient in computer skills including Outlook for email and scheduling, and Microsoft TEAMS for virtual meetings.
  • Must be able to travel throughout NYC on public transportation.
  • Must be able to carry a laptop and MIFI.
  • Must be able to type using a laptop and/or stationary computer.
  • Need to be able to travel throughout NYC via public transportation.
  • Physical effort may include ascending or descending stairs for subways and to residences.
