About the Role
The R2 Gateway team owns the request-facing layer of R2, Cloudflare's object storage platform. This layer includes the S3-compatible API gateway that handles all object operations (put, get, list, delete). The team is responsible for evolving the API to meet rapid growth, managing authentication, request routing, rate limiting, and coordination between clients and R2's storage and metadata layers, while maintaining S3 API compatibility and ensuring low-latency, highly available global access.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and operate the S3-compatible API gateway, ensuring correctness, low latency, and S3 API compatibility.
- Build and operate production services on Cloudflare Workers and Kubernetes for high-throughput traffic with strong availability and durability.
- Own the end-to-end request path, including authentication, authorization, routing, rate limiting, and error handling.
- Manage interfaces between the gateway and R2's storage and metadata layers.
- Own projects from design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production monitoring.
- Continuously improve gateway reliability, performance, and observability.
- Quickly learn unfamiliar and legacy code, and reduce operational toil.
- Participate in on-call rotations, drive incident resolution, and write postmortems.
- Extensively use AI tools to accelerate development, debugging, and operational tasks.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on API contracts, capacity planning, and initiatives.
Requirements
- Strong programming skills in Rust, TypeScript, Go, or similar languages.
- Experience building or operating large-scale distributed systems on the request path with strict latency and reliability requirements.
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure concepts like object storage, HTTP/API gateways, edge computing, or service-oriented architectures.
- Experience designing and operating high-throughput APIs, including authentication, routing, rate limiting, and backward-compatible API evolution.
- Understanding of reliability and observability practices (monitoring, alerting, performance tuning, incident response).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical explanations and cross-team coordination.
- Comfortable using AI coding tools in daily development workflows.
- Experience with the S3 API surface, Cloudflare Workers, Durable Objects, or edge computing platforms is a strong plus.
