About the Role

The Infection Control Preventionist is responsible for the prevention, investigation, monitoring, and reporting of communicable disease spread at St. John’s. This role combines epidemiological and public health practices with administrative tasks, including resident and staff education on infection control protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Review and update the resident infection roster weekly.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of the Facility Pandemic Emergency Plan.
  • Stay current on guidance from CDS and CMS regarding infectious disease measures.
  • Implement and review the facility’s infection prevention and control program.
  • Implement and monitor policies and procedures for facility infection prevention.
  • Provide education for staff, residents, and families on infection prevention and control.
  • Implement measures for outbreak control in affected facility areas.
  • Coordinate with other departments during outbreaks.
  • Notify appropriate public health authorities of outbreaks.
  • Submit required reports on HERDS.
  • Implement and review the facility’s COVID, Flu, RSV, and Immunization programs.
  • Liaise with clinical teams on standards, audits, and research.
  • Liaise with the Employee Health Nurse on staff health issues.
  • Track infections and report trends in the QAPI committee.
  • Work closely with medical providers on the Antibiotic Stewardship Program.
  • Review quality indicators monthly.
  • Respond to infectious disease emergencies as needed.
  • Coordinate and assist with required testing for COVID, flu, and RSV.
  • Coordinate and assist with administering required vaccinations.
  • Assist with clinical needs as requested by the DON or ADON.

Requirements

  • Current professional registered nurse licensure in New York.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing or equivalent work experience.
  • Current Infection Prevention Certification (or willingness to obtain within 3 months of hire).
  • At least two years of experience in managing an infection prevention program.
  • Ability to interact with and care for residents.
  • Willingness to embrace and exemplify St. John’s Brand Characteristics.

  • Expertise in infection control and prevention processes.
  • Ability to provide friendly, helpful, courteous service.
  • Skilled in group and individual training on infection prevention principles.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Ability to identify potential infectious disease concerns and intervene.
