About the Role

As the Head of Middle Market, Americas, you will embody AXA XL's values, lead the Middle Market Underwriting unit, and be responsible for developing and executing the Americas strategy for this segment. You will collaborate with regional underwriting leaders, partners, and the Global Underwriting Office. This role has full P&L responsibility and reports directly to the CEO Americas, serving as a member of the Americas Leadership team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a strategy for profitable growth in the Middle Market segment, focusing on solutions that matter most, valued beyond the policy, data that deepens relationships, and a focused, fit, and fast approach.
  • Grow the unit organically by building critical market assets, including product portfolio, distribution network, and operating platform, while exploring avenues for accelerated organic growth.
  • Provide strategic direction and data-driven decisions for the team on risk assessment and portfolio management to drive underwriting excellence, profitable growth, and performance optimization.
  • Execute long-term underwriting goals and a cycle management strategy to achieve outstanding underwriting performance and profitable growth, setting and achieving qualitative and quantitative targets for the underwriting team.
  • Foster a culture of innovation within the underwriting team and across the organization to proactively address emerging risks and leverage new technologies.
  • Provide effective and inspirational leadership and management to the underwriting team, creating a high-performance culture.
  • Align the underwriting proposition with the Company’s brokers and clients, and develop new relationships within the market to increase production and profit for AXA XL.
  • Represent AXA XL in industry forums and engage with key stakeholders internally and externally to enhance relationships and business opportunities.
  • Build and promote AXA XL’s brand, underwriting, risk services, claims, and client experience leadership in the external insurance market, leveraging the Group’s capital standing and global reach.
  • Lead continuous underwriting operational improvement and transformation, and maintain a sound governance framework for the business.
  • Develop productive relationships with AXA XL and AXA Group leadership to promote a shared view of the performance and potential of the Americas Programs and E&S segment, and the necessary investments and strategies.
  • Ensure business adherence to underwriting governance, compliance principles, and regulatory standards.
  • Drive the identification and prioritization of opportunities and allocate appropriate resources to deliver high levels of customer service.
  • Develop and implement underwriting strategies to optimize expense ratios, monitoring and analyzing underwriting expenses, identifying cost-saving opportunities, and collaborating with finance and operations teams to control and reduce underwriting expenses.
  • Set individual objectives, conduct performance reviews and appraisals, and provide ongoing feedback to ensure team members understand their requirements and performance against objectives.
  • As a member of the Americas Leadership team, provide visionary leadership, innovation, thought partnership, and effective communication to collaborate and influence executives to achieve organizational objectives across various AXA levels.
  • Leverage AXA Group’s international reach and navigate AXA Group organizational culture and global footprint using empathy, collaboration, and inclusion to create business impact.

Requirements

  • Must have the experience, leadership, and technical skills to own the P&L and directly lead the associated underwriting function in the Americas for AXA XL.
  • Must have a very deep understanding of the Americas P&C Insurance market, pricing, and underwriting techniques.
  • Must possess relationships and credibility with critical distribution partners.
  • Must have the ability to influence and inspire colleagues to deliver on business objectives while collaborating with others across the organization.
  • Must be able to attract and develop technical and leadership strength on the team at all levels of the organization.
  • Must demonstrate exemplary behaviors aligned with corporate values, including a commitment to client focus, ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Must demonstrate enthusiasm for staying abreast of key market and industry trends (e.g., underwriting, competition, technology, data, regulatory).
