About the Role
Newsquest London is seeking an ambitious breaking news reporter to lead live news coverage. This fast-paced digital role involves responding to major incidents and developing stories as they happen, combining traditional news judgment with responsible AI tool usage for enhanced speed, accuracy, and efficiency while upholding journalistic standards. The role requires using social media for visuals and quotes, and presenting live on platforms like Facebook Live.
Responsibilities
- Identify, report, and publish breaking news stories across London quickly, accurately, and responsibly.
- React to live incidents and ongoing developing stories, providing rolling updates.
- Use AI tools for background research, writing copy and headlines, with editorial oversight.
- Source stories through social media, emergency services, contacts, and verified tip-offs.
- Attend incidents in person, conduct door-knocking, and perform scene reporting to gather quotes.
- Shoot and present video footage of live incidents for coverage.
- Write clear, compelling, and legally sound copy at speed for digital audiences.
- Utilize analytics and audience data to inform story framing, headlines, and follow-up coverage.
- Publish content efficiently across CMS, social platforms, and newsletters.
- Collaborate with editors, reporters, and newsroom teams to maximize reach and impact.
- Participate in a rota covering early starts, late finishes, and weekends.
Requirements
- Strong news sense and the ability to spot and prioritize breaking stories.
- NCTJ qualification or equivalent.
- Ability to work calmly and accurately under intense time pressure.
- Excellent writing skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in using social media to find stories and verify content.
- Confidence in shooting and presenting video to camera.
- Solid understanding of UK media law and the Editors’ Code of Practice.
- Willingness to work shifts, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
- Openness to using AI tools as part of a modern newsroom workflow.
- Experience in a digital or breaking news environment (desirable).
- Knowledge of SEO and Google Trends (desirable).
- Familiarity with analytics platforms and audience metrics (desirable).
- Experience live-blogging or running rolling news articles (desirable).
