About the Role
The Department of Elections is seeking seasonal Mail Processing Equipment Operators to prepare for the November 3, 2026, Consolidated General Election. This role involves setting up, operating, and monitoring mail processing equipment to handle high volumes of election mail, ensuring accurate and timely processing.
Responsibilities
- Set up, operate, and monitor mail processing equipment for election mail according to established procedures.
- Verify equipment settings and processing parameters before and during mail runs.
- Monitor equipment performance, mail flow, and production output.
- Track daily mail volumes and production benchmarks, communicating status to the Ballot Distribution Manager.
- Make routine equipment and workflow adjustments based on mail flow, equipment performance, or processing needs.
- Identify and address equipment malfunctions, processing errors, or jams within established procedures, escalating issues as needed.
- Maintain accurate production records, including mail volumes and equipment activity.
- Perform quality-control checks to ensure processing and sorting accuracy.
- Coordinate mail flow into and out of equipment to maintain continuous processing.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area around mail-processing equipment.
- Assist with other ballot-processing tasks such as adjudication, tabulation, and remake.
Requirements
- One year of clerical experience including record/document preparation and maintenance, filing, office equipment use, public contact, and mail processing.
- Ability to learn and operate mail processing equipment and follow operating procedures.
- Ability to monitor equipment performance and mail flow, recognizing irregularities.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in quality-control checks.
- Ability to maintain accurate production and processing records.
- Ability to respond to routine equipment or processing issues and communicate problems.
- Ability to remain attentive and work efficiently in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment.
- Dependability, punctuality, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing.
- Ability to lift and handle items weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Must be available to work flexible schedules, including mandatory evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight shifts.
- Must be available to work overnight shifts during the peak election period (approximately three to five days after November 3, 2026).

Education Level
- Substitution: Completion of an approved City and County of San Francisco Clerical Administrative Training program, or completion of a clerical training program (240 hours), or 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university may substitute for up to 6 months of required experience.
Salary/Compensations
- $32.1625 per hour
