About the Role

The Department of Elections is seeking seasonal Mail Processing Equipment Junior Clerks to support the Consolidated General Election. This role involves basic clerical and mail-handling duties related to the department's mail processing operation, working alongside Mail Processing Equipment Operators.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and collect processed election mail from automated mail processing equipment.
  • Remove processed mail from output areas and place it into designated trays, bins, or containers.
  • Sort and organize processed mail according to designated categories, sequences, and instructions.
  • Replace full trays, bins, or containers and stage completed containers in designated areas.
  • Prepare and replenish empty trays, bins, containers, and other materials for mail processing.
  • Identify and separate mail requiring additional processing or review and route it to the designated location.
  • Maintain routine counts, labels, logs, and other basic records related to mail handled.
  • Monitor output areas for accumulating mail, full containers, or irregular mail flow and notify the Mail Processing Equipment Operator or supervisor.
  • Move processed and unprocessed mail between designated work areas.
  • Perform routine checks to ensure processed mail is placed in appropriate designated trays or containers.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area and ensure supplies are readily available.
  • Perform other basic clerical and mail-handling duties as assigned.
  • Assist with other basic clerical and election-related tasks as required by operational needs.

Requirements

  • Six months of clerical experience including preparing and maintaining records, filing, use of office equipment, public contact, and processing mail.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established mail-handling procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when sorting, organizing, and handling election mail.
  • Ability to perform repetitive mail-handling and sorting tasks accurately and efficiently for extended periods.
  • Ability to maintain routine counts, logs, labels, and other basic processing records.
  • Ability to recognize and promptly report irregular mail flow, full output containers, or other observable processing issues.
  • Ability to remain attentive and organized while working in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment.
  • Dependability, punctuality, and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Must be available to work flexible schedules, including mandatory evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight shifts.
  • Must be available to work overnight shifts during the peak election period (approximately November 3, 2026, for three to five days thereafter).
  • Requires prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing.
  • Ability to lift and handle items weighing up to 25 pounds.

Salary/Compensations

  • $29.55 per hour
