About the Role

The Associate Provost, Academic and Faculty Excellence provides leadership for academic quality, curriculum, and academic policy. This role also leads the Center for Faculty Excellence, designing programming to advance instructional quality, curricular innovation, scholarly productivity, and inclusive pedagogy for full-time and adjunct faculty. The incumbent serves as Acting Provost in times of need.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a resource to deans and department chairs on faculty policy interpretation and application.
  • Manage faculty workload policy, course releases, and overload processes.
  • Administer faculty awards, recognition programs, and internal grant competitions.
  • Serve as a point of contact for faculty questions about academic policy and process.
  • Direct grievances, appeals, and complaints arising from personnel decisions to appropriate bodies.
  • Chair the General Education and Curriculum Committees of the Academic Senate.
  • Liaise with Libraries, Information Technology Systems, Student Engagement and Development, and other units on academic concerns.
  • Represent the Office of the Provost on university committees, task forces, and governance bodies.
  • Serve as Acting Provost as needed.
  • Lead and set the strategic direction of the Center for Faculty Excellence.
  • Lead, supervise, and develop Center staff.
  • Design and deliver faculty development programming for full-time, part-time, and adjunct faculty.
  • Design and administer new faculty onboarding and orientation.
  • Coordinate university-wide faculty mentoring efforts.
  • Provide confidential consultation on teaching, including classroom observation and course design review.
  • Advance evidence-based, inclusive, and learner-centered teaching practice.
  • Support faculty engagement with emerging instructional technologies, including AI in teaching and learning.
  • Support faculty research and scholarly development.
  • Provide support for portfolio preparation for faculty reappointment, promotion, or tenure.
  • Partner with various university units to deliver coherent support to faculty.
  • Establish and report on measures of the Center's reach, quality, and impact.
  • Manage the Center's budget and resources.
  • Pursue external funding where appropriate.
  • Represent the university in regional and national educational development networks.

Requirements

  • Doctorate or terminal degree.
  • A record of teaching, scholarship, and service sufficient for appointment with tenure at the rank of associate professor or professor.
  • Successful and demonstrated experience with faculty development.
  • Knowledge and experience with policy, curriculum, and contracts.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with and earn the trust of faculty and administrators.
  • Working knowledge of faculty personnel processes, including reappointment, promotion, and tenure review.
  • Working knowledge of evidence-based pedagogy, inclusive teaching practice, and course design.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to write clearly about policy and facilitate effectively across disciplines.
  • Sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential matters.
  • A record of teaching, scholarship, and service sufficient for appointment with tenure at the rank of professor (preferred).
  • Experience working within a collective bargaining environment (preferred).
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible academic leadership experience (preferred).
  • Experience at a university with professional and technical programs, multiple campuses, and a substantial graduate and international student population (preferred).
  • Familiarity with regional and specialized accreditation requirements (preferred).
  • Experience supporting online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced instruction (preferred).
  • Experience with budget management and staff supervision (preferred).
