About the Role

The Water Treatment Technician I supports the operation of the company’s wastewater treatment facilities, which operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This role is responsible for performing routine sampling, laboratory testing, equipment monitoring, and preventive maintenance to help ensure proper plant operation and environmental compliance. The Technician I assists with documentation, inspections, and regulatory testing requirements under the direction of a licensed operator. This position provides critical support in maintaining biological and mechanical treatment systems, handling waste streams safely, and responding to operational needs as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Follow and comply with all OSHA, EPA, DEC, and DOT regulations for wastewater and waste handling.
  • Collect 24-hour composite and grab samples of influent and effluent wastewater streams and coordinate off site laboratory testing for either routine monitoring or permit related purposes.
  • Perform routine laboratory testing of influent and effluent wastewater streams for state mandated testing and system monitoring.
  • Initiate and interpret all phases of an investigation for any non-compliance events with the SPDES permit parameters and complete all required documentation and notifications.
  • Perform PM and routine maintenance for Wastewater Treatment Plant and plant-wide fire pump and tank systems to ensure proper operation.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate documentation for sampling, testing, and maintenance activities in accordance with state and company requirements.
  • Make routine process and mechanical adjustments of controls to maintain compliance in wastewater treatment plant operations.
  • Assist with regulatory inspections by providing requested documentation and supporting plant leadership.
  • Maintain daily logs per DEC & EPA requirements, including related reports and submissions to environmental agencies.
  • Support machinery and equipment repairs, conducts maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, collections, and distribution systems.
  • Assist with the upkeep of the mechanical equipment for the plant-wide fire prevention system.
  • Evaluate all generated waste streams for compliance in handling wastewater.
  • Must be trained and qualified in PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for confined space entries.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be available for call-in response to plant or compliance emergencies outside of regular hours.
  • Computer literacy for data entry and reporting.
  • Strong teamwork, adaptability, and communication skills.

Skills

  • Knowledgeable in WWTP laboratory procedures and testing methods.
  • Familiarity with equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance, good troubleshooting/problem solving skills.

Work Type

  • 1st Shift is 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday

Experience Level

  • 1-3 years’ experience in similar waste water or handler role.

Education Level

  • High school diploma/GED or higher.

Salary/Compensations

  • $25.41/hour and up
