About the Role
The Master Teacher/Center Coordinator is responsible for teaching and maintaining a safe and developmentally appropriate pre-school classroom. This role involves preparing and implementing lesson plans, supervising Pre-K staff, overseeing daily operations, and acting as a liaison between the Watertown School District and Community Action.
Responsibilities
- Provide activities for children in initiative, language and literacy, music and movement, logic and mathematics, social relations, creative representation, self-help, and social/emotional areas.
- Plan and implement age-appropriate activities for preschool children.
- Complete written observations monthly for individualized planning and Progress Reports.
- Ensure classrooms follow State Education Department guidelines for Health and Safety.
- Attend and participate in CPSE meetings for assigned children.
- Model appropriate behavior for children.
- Conduct parent conferences bi-annually.
- Complete developmental screening of each child within 45 days of enrollment.
- Manage appropriate behavior of staff and classroom volunteers.
- Conduct an orientation with new staff and volunteers.
- Manage and model appropriate behaviors and guidance techniques for subordinates.
- Supervise Teacher Assistant, Teacher Aide, substitutes and volunteers.
- Offer positive feedback and suggestions for improvement to subordinates.
- Complete performance evaluations for subordinates.
- Address focus areas and deliver counseling statements as needed.
- Utilize the communications system for timely information flow.
- Attend and actively participate in various team meetings.
- Facilitate Center team meetings at least monthly.
- Seek appropriate resources for staff and parent concerns.
- Track attendance of children on a weekly basis.
- Write monthly newsletters for parents.
- Schedule field trips and classroom visitors.
- Compile monthly statistics for the End of the Month Report.
- Distribute interoffice mail.
- Assess and mediate parent concerns, documenting outcomes.
- Act as a liaison with the Head Start Administrative Team.
- Attend professional development trainings as recommended by supervisor.
- Maintain a training data sheet to ensure annual training requirements are met.
- Complete purchase orders for classroom supplies and food items.
- Review and sign employee timesheets bi-weekly.
- Review and initial employee travel vouchers.
- Participate in the annual self-assessment process.
- Participate in interviews of prospective work experience people and staff.
- Participate in recruitment efforts to maintain enrollment.
- Carry out duties as appropriate at any Agency buildings.
- Complete file reviews and provide feedback.
- Maintain classroom coverage by scheduling substitutes.
- Provide oversight for the implementation of Pre-K regulations and mandates.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in early childhood education or a bachelor's degree with equivalent coursework in ECE (18 credit hours in ECE and/or child development).
- Four years' experience in Early Childhood.
- Two years of supervision experience.
- Basic computer skills including email, word processing, and data entry.
- Working knowledge of child development.
- Supportive in working with diverse families.
- Ability to work with young children.
- Maintain confidentiality of program and agency information.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
- Effective supervisory skills.
- Ability to keep accurate detailed records.
- Serve as an advocate for children and their families.
- Strong organization, planning, time management, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of community resources.
- Ability to operate vision and hearing screening machines.
- Ability to work as a team member and cooperate with staff.
- Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory physical exam and TB test.
- Must be able to provide independent transportation and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Must have medical insurance or utilize Agency Fringe Benefit for health insurance.
- Must pass background checks including NYS Central Register for Child Abuse & Maltreatment, NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services, and Office of Children & Family Services.
- Must sign an annual affidavit regarding child abuse or neglect cases.
- Must pass drug testing if required.
