About the Role

Partner closely with the lab manager to turn ideas into physical hardware rapidly, utilizing 3D printing, CNC machining, and quick-turn development builds for fast learning cycles. This role emphasizes rapid iteration across multiple concepts, quick decision-making, and getting functional prototypes to the team for evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical parts and assemblies in CAD, moving quickly from concept sketch to a build-ready file.
  • Partner day-to-day with the lab manager to plan and execute rapid prototyping spins using 3D printing (FDM/SLA/SLS), CNC machining, laser cutting, and other quick-turn development materials and processes.
  • Choose the fastest path to a testable prototype, considering the right process, material, and fidelity for the question being answered.
  • Design for manufacturability and printability/machinability from the outset, identifying potential issues early.
  • Build, assemble, and bench-test prototypes, demonstrating comfort in a lab/shop environment.
  • Manage multiple concurrent design threads and re-prioritize based on incoming test results.
  • Maintain concise documentation, including revisions, BOMs, and test notes, to ensure traceability alongside iteration speed.
  • Collaborate with electrical, firmware, and product teammates to incorporate their constraints into subsequent design iterations.

Requirements

  • Strong, demonstrable CAD skills (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, or similar) enabling quick and clean modeling of complex parts and assemblies.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printing and CNC machining, including practical knowledge of their capabilities and limitations.
  • A proven track record of fast prototyping cycles, with examples of taking concepts to physical hardware in days rather than months.
  • Working knowledge of materials selection (plastics, metals, common development stock) for both prototyping and production intent.
  • Comfort in a physical lab/shop environment, with a preference for hands-on machine operation.
  • Strong instincts for design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA).
  • Experience with additional fabrication methods such as laser cutting, sheet metal, vacuum forming, and urethane casting is a plus.
  • Basic GD&T and tolerance-stack fluency is a plus.
  • Prior experience in a startup, robotics, hardware R&D, or similar fast-iteration environment is a plus.
  • Familiarity with PDM/version control for CAD files is a plus.
