About the Role

The Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) is seeking to hire a Litigator to join our Litigation Team in the Toronto office. This role involves providing litigation services to meet the needs of ONA and its membership, with regular travel throughout the province.

Responsibilities

• Accountable for the functions of the Litigation Team mandate, including contract administration, achieving ONA’s position, maintaining member rights, and providing strategic advice.
• Primarily represents ONA and members at rights arbitrations.
• Provides advice in relation to human rights/return to work/accommodation, occupational health & safety, and proceedings before the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB).
• Provides service to ONA staff, bargaining units, and members consistent with ONA strategic outcomes and member values.
• Identifies risks and opportunities related to ONA’s goals and mandate, including litigation strategies.
• Actively participates as a team member to ensure organizational accountabilities are met.
• Makes observable contributions to the success of other team members and the overall performance of the team.
• Completes timely, quality work and ensures cases are properly prepared in advance of the hearing.
• Consults with the Manager, Litigation, and/or Senior Legal Counsel, and acts independently to solve issues.
• Provides written reports to Management on areas of activity, including daily reports and notification of significant cases.
• Demonstrates solid client relations, communication skills, and sound professional judgment.
• Acts as a leader and mentor, contributing to the improvement of the litigation team and case litigation.
• Participates in education for staff and membership as requested.

Requirements

• A LL.B/Juris Doctor (J.D.) is required.
• A minimum of two (2) years of relevant work experience including demonstrated knowledge in representation of Trade Unions at arbitration and/or related practice areas.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in labour relations/industrial relations.
• The successful candidate must be able to travel, possess a valid driver’s license and have access to an automobile for business use.
