About the Role
The Kitchen Porter Supervisor helps lead the kitchen team, ensuring a clean, safe, and efficient working environment across all kitchen areas. This role upholds hygiene and health and safety standards while supporting smooth culinary operations by organizing and directing the day-to-day work of kitchen porters. Working closely with the Head Chef and kitchen management, the supervisor allocates tasks, monitors standards, and steps in hands-on during busy periods, playing a key role in enabling the team to deliver high-quality service for all events and dining services within the venue.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate the kitchen porter, allocating tasks and managing workflow to ensure all kitchen areas, floors, surfaces, and storage rooms are kept clean, hygienic, and organised in line with health and safety regulations.
- Oversee the operation of dishwashing equipment, ensuring pots, pans, crockery, cutlery, and utensils are cleaned and sanitised efficiently and to standard.
- Support the chefs with the team's involvement in simple food prep tasks (e.g. peeling, chopping, assembling ingredients) as directed, particularly during busy service times.
- Oversee the unloading, checking, and correct storage of food and supply deliveries in line with stock rotation and food safety standards, escalating quality or accuracy issues as needed.
- Ensure kitchen waste disposal, recycling, and rubbish removal are carried out regularly and correctly to maintain a clean and safe environment.
- Plan and manage porter rotas, breaks, and cover to ensure adequate staffing across events and service periods.
- Train, induct, and support kitchen porters, monitoring performance and coaching on standards and best practice.
- Conduct regular checks of cleanliness, hygiene, and equipment, ensuring compliance with food safety and health and safety requirements and reporting maintenance or equipment faults.
- Work collaboratively with chefs and kitchen management to ensure smooth kitchen operations, especially during busy events or service periods.
Requirements
- Previous experience as a kitchen porter, with the ability to lead and motivate a team.
- Ability to work quickly and efficiently under pressure, and to keep a team focused during busy service periods.
- Good time management, organisational, and task-allocation skills.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly in cleanliness and hygiene standards.
- Sound working knowledge of food safety and health and safety practices in a kitchen environment.
- Ability to give clear direction as well as take instruction from senior kitchen staff.
- Good communication skills and the ability to lead by example as part of a team.
- Reliable, punctual, and committed to maintaining high standards.
- Positive, can-do attitude with a willingness to learn and develop others.
- Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities during events and peak service times.
- Takes pride in leading a clean, safe, and efficient kitchen operation.
