About the Role

This role is for experienced media and publishing professionals who want to share their knowledge and help shape a growing ecosystem for public interest journalism. As Head of Upskilling, you will have content and strategic responsibility for our knowledge transfer offerings, providing real value to media professionals and giving back to the industry long-term.

Responsibilities

  • Overall content responsibility for the DACH-wide upskilling program and its strategic development.
  • Identify future competencies needed by media professionals and design suitable learning formats (e.g., deep dives, learning visits, coaching).
  • Assess coaching needs of funding partners and suitability of external experts based on industry knowledge.
  • Implement Strategy Grants in collaboration with Head of Funding & Strategy and support the development of funded media organizations.
  • Provide coaching to funded media organizations and offer professional guidance based on media economics experience.
  • Manage an Event Production Manager and a network of external coaches and consultants.
  • Develop the community of funding partners and applicants, expanding knowledge and networking opportunities.
  • Create an environment for team autonomy while providing clear content direction.
  • Explore new formats, incorporate international insights, and develop approaches beneficial to the entire industry.

Requirements

  • Several years of experience in the media industry (editorial, publishing, or related fields) with a strong understanding of both content and business aspects of publishing.
  • Experience in designing and implementing learning or competency development programs, preferably in a non-profit or innovation-oriented context.
  • Enjoyment of genuine knowledge transfer; desire to shape content and possess the expertise to guide media professionals.
  • Initial or established leadership experience; ability to develop and manage a small team and external partners.
  • Strategic thinking combined with pragmatic execution skills and enjoyment of working in a young, agile organization.
  • Very good written and spoken German and English skills; French is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel within Europe, especially in the DACH region.
  • Identification with the goals and values of the Media Forward Fund.
