About the Role
Assist in the day-to-day smooth running of courses and exhibitions at The Royal Drawing School, providing key service to students, tutors, models, and Education teams. Studio Technicians are responsible for the management of studios and storage spaces across all venues and must exhibit a strong understanding of Health and Safety.
Responsibilities
- Set up, run, and close down studio spaces safely and efficiently across courses, providing technical (including AV and online) support.
- Ensure studios are equipped, clean, and set up with sufficient materials for student use; move easels, boards, and paper for classes and create tutor sets.
- Set up the Print Room and other specialist studio spaces ahead of scheduled classes.
- Provide tutors and guest speakers with AV support throughout classes and events.
- Act as digital host for online (Zoom) classes when an Education team member is unavailable.
- Support class changeovers between sessions and provide short cover for colleagues' breaks.
- Put out evening refreshments and registers and sweep between classes.
- Leave studios safe and tidy at the end of each day, ensuring materials and furniture are stored away, windows are closed, and heaters are switched off.
- Bag up used studio linens for laundry collection.
- Maintain studios and storage spaces in good working order, carrying out practical repairs and improvements.
- Complete on-site repairs and maintenance, including replacing and repairing studio equipment through general carpentry.
- Assist in building new additions to the studio, such as storage racks and trolleys.
- Ensure the School maintains use of allocated storage, keeping spaces tidy and accessible.
- Liaise with the Technician Manager and Facilities Management on the proper upkeep of studios and report problems.
- Support the planning and delivery of School exhibitions and events, from framing and hanging to packaging and promotion.
- Frame student work using the School's stock frames and assist in maintaining and storing frames.
- Assist in hanging exhibitions and ensure walls are returned to their original clean state.
- Assist in organizing appropriate art packaging and delivery of works.
- Assist School staff with in-house events and parties, and represent the School when possible.
- Provide technical assistance at offsite bespoke courses.
- Keep studios and courses well stocked, ordering and tracking materials in a cost-aware and timely way.
- Assist in designing and implementing stock inventories each term.
- Order materials for studios, courses, and programmes, being aware of budgets.
- Ensure steady stock levels are maintained and collect/deliver materials between studios.
- Apply the School's Health & Safety policies and procedures consistently.
- Ensure studios are set up and run in line with H&S policies and guidelines.
- Assist in ensuring students and tutors are aware of studio risk assessments and help enforce studio rules.
- Ensure risk assessments are completed for each course, signed off, and files kept up to date.
- Ensure wires are covered to avoid trip hazards and correct signage is in place.
- Monitor First Aid boxes and inform the Facilities, Health and Safety Manager of required refills.
- Provide a warm, professional front-line service to students, tutors, and models.
- Take payments from students for drop-in courses.
- Build excellent rapport with students and tutors.
Requirements
- Must be knowledgeable about an array of arts materials, particularly drawing materials.
- Must be confident with hanging art works of varying sizes and fixtures.
- Must be confident with using hand tools.
- Must be flexible and adaptable, able to work extra days during busy exhibition periods.
- Must have an understanding of the needs of art schools and artists.
- Must be a self-starter and very proactive.
- Must have excellent time management skills.
- Must have good spoken and written communication skills.
- Must have good knowledge of office equipment and software (e.g., Microsoft Office - Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Must have an understanding of audio-visual equipment and a willingness to learn.
- Must be able to carry easels and other art equipment, which can be physically demanding.
