About the Role
Senior Backend Engineers work across our backend organisation, contributing to small, autonomous groups with short release cycles and end-to-end ownership from problem definition through production.
Responsibilities
- Own backend solutions end to end, including understanding business problems, shaping requirements, designing, building, testing, deploying, and running solutions in production.
- Design and evolve services for performance, scale, resilience, and data integrity.
- Make clear technical decisions, considering constraints, alternatives, and trade-offs.
- Maintain code and systems as products and requirements evolve.
- Diagnose and address difficult production problems, including their root causes and prevention.
- Collaborate with product and engineering colleagues to create simple, durable solutions from complex requirements.
- Critically review work, share knowledge, and elevate engineering standards within the team.
Requirements
- Proven ownership of backend services built and operated within a microservices architecture.
- Strong understanding of communication protocols like HTTP, WebSockets, and AMQP, and their appropriate applications.
- Production fluency in at least one modern backend framework.
- Deep knowledge of relational databases, including indexing, transactions, isolation levels, locking mechanisms, and high-performance design.
- Track record of designing systems for high availability, scalability, and resilience.
- Clear, structured problem-solving skills and the ability to articulate technical decisions and trade-offs.
- Strong engineering fundamentals, sound judgment, and confidence in learning new technologies.
- Depth in one backend ecosystem and sound tool choice are valued over familiarity with all technologies.
