About the Role

The Food Handler organizes on-site dispatch logistics for volunteer drivers and runners, ensuring meals are safely sorted and distributed according to delivery routes. The role includes working at multiple dispatch sites, assisting with food handling operations, and completing meal delivery routes when volunteer shortages occur.

Responsibilities

  • Receives Meals on Wheels food from the supplier and verifies accuracy, quality, and correct labelling; reports discrepancies immediately.
  • Sorts and loads meal items into coolers according to pre-assigned delivery routes.
  • Meets volunteer drivers and runners at the send-off location, provides route sheets, and assists with safe vehicle loading.
  • Notifies the Meals on Wheels Lead of delays, volunteer absences, or disruptions, and collaborates to ensure route coverage.
  • Delivers meals using agency vehicles when volunteers are unavailable.
  • Transports meals to alternate volunteer dispatch sites as required.
  • Cleans and sanitizes all coolers, baskets, and related equipment after each delivery shift.
  • Works respectfully and collaboratively with volunteers, reporting any concerns to the Supervisor.
  • Works closely with Food Services staff to support all food handling and program needs.
  • Provides cross-coverage for office staff during vacations, sick leave, or staffing shortages.
  • Delivers consistent, high-quality customer service to clients.
  • Responds professionally to emergency situations in accordance with unit and agency policies.
  • Liaises with internal staff and attends meetings as directed by the Supervisor.
  • Participates in regular supervisory check-ins and participates in program-level and individual performance evaluations.
  • Upholds the organization’s anti-racism objectives and community development principles.
  • Engages in ongoing training and professional development as required by WoodGreen.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Valid Food Handler Certificate.
  • Valid full “G” driver’s license and a 3-year clean Driver’s Abstract are required.
  • Physically able to lift up to 25–35 lbs, walk stairs, and carry insulated delivery bags.
  • Ability to push trolleys with coolers weighing approximately 80 lbs daily.
  • Experience in food delivery, courier work, customer service, or community support roles.
  • Experience working with seniors or vulnerable populations is considered an advantage.
  • Knowledge of safe food handling, contamination prevention, and temperature control procedures.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong multitasking skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good judgment and problem-solving skills, particularly regarding logistical challenges.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork abilities.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and reliable.
  • Adaptable, patient, and able to navigate frequent changes.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Physically able to meet job demands.
  • Willing to work across multiple sites as required.
  • Able to follow directions and exercise sound judgment when making decisions.
  • Must have the ability to transport between program locations as required.
  • Ability to maintain all aspects of client confidentiality.
