About the Role

The Activity Specialist creates and facilitates a safe, supportive, and enriching environment for participants in the COMPASS and SONYC programs. This role is key in delivering high-quality youth development programming that promotes academic achievement, social-emotional growth, creativity, leadership, and positive engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with program leadership to implement and enhance program curriculum and activities.
  • Develop and implement specialized activity lesson plans and instructional materials.
  • Deliver engaging instruction and facilitate activities in various settings.
  • Supervise and manage assigned groups of participants, maintaining structure and accountability.
  • Create and maintain a fun, welcoming, and visually appealing learning environment.
  • Establish a classroom and activity environment conducive to learning and appropriate to participant needs.
  • Facilitate a safe, structured, and productive learning environment.
  • Supervise participants during all program components, ensuring safety and well-being.
  • Model, teach, and reinforce age-appropriate social, emotional, and behavioral skills.
  • Utilize positive behavior management strategies and restorative practices.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, professionalism, and enthusiasm.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with participants, families, school personnel, and colleagues.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, activity reports, and other required program records.
  • Assist in the preparation, organization, and maintenance of instructional materials and program spaces.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Adhere to all policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Support program-wide initiatives, family engagement activities, and special events.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with children in a classroom setting, with children less than 13 years of age.
  • Minimum 1 year of prior experience teaching or facilitating group activities, with children less than 13 years of age.
  • Must be culturally competent.
  • Must pass reference and background checks.
  • Willing to take initiative and be flexible when needed.
  • Excels working in a collaborative environment to achieve target objects and outcomes.

Skills

  • Knowledge of STEAM, Art, Music, Various Organized Sports, or similar subject areas.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong mathematical skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and complete work independently.
  • Ability to work indoors in a school-based setting for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors (as needed).
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for at least 20% of the time.
  • Ability to clearly communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Ability to observe details at close range.
  • Occasional local travel to employer sites, community organizations, and UAU offices.

Experience Level

  • $23.00 - $28.00 Hourly
