About the Role
The Custodian is responsible for providing high-quality, exceptional maintenance within their assigned UAU worksite, ensuring all areas are sanitized and maintained to provide a clean, safe environment for participants and staff. The Custodian also ensures the worksite follows all required safety, health, and operational protocols.
Responsibilities
- Perform general cleaning and janitorial duties in common areas including offices, bathrooms, kitchens, gymnasiums, classrooms, and common areas.
- Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and/or vacuuming.
- Strip and wax floors as needed and directed.
- Perform and document routine inspection and maintenance activities.
- Carry out heavy cleansing tasks and special projects as directed.
- Collect and remove garbage daily.
- Service, clean, and restock restrooms, kitchens, and breakrooms daily.
- Follow safety procedures for chemical cleaners and power equipment.
- Notify management when major repairs or maintenance are needed.
- Request and coordinate ordering of cleaning and maintenance supplies and equipment.
- Maintain a neat, organized janitor's room/area with stocked supplies.
- Wash windows and other hard surfaces regularly.
- Abide by OSHA, NY State Workers Comp, NYC Department of Health, and UAU Safety Program policies and regulations.
- Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be 18 years or older at time of hire.
- Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of cleaning and sanitizing solutions.
- Must pass reference and background checks.
- Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine maintenance.
- Ability to keep assigned UAU worksite facility clean and orderly.
- Ability to interact professionally, politely, and courteously with staff, participants, parents, and visitors.
- Detail-oriented and thorough while conducting and completing work independently.
- Willing to take initiative and be flexible when needed.
- Ability to stand, sit, and walk.
- Specific vision and hearing abilities are required.
- Ability to communicate information and ideas clearly.
- Ability to observe details at close range.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position for at least 10% of the time.
- Includes working prolonged periods of time standing and walking, about 95% of the day.
- Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
