About the Role

The Instructor will provide a safe, caring, and enriching opportunity for participants in the COMPASS/SONYC Programs. This role involves implementing a project-based learning experience using UAU’s curriculum to help participants strengthen their educational skills and lead specialized activities such as STEAM, art, organized sports, music, literacy, and academic support.

Responsibilities

  • Provide evidence of curriculum development and collaborate with the Program Director and Educational School-Based Content Specialist.
  • Implement and assist with the development of specialized activity lesson plans and instructional materials.
  • Provide individualized and group lessons utilizing a variation of teaching methods for programming curriculum.
  • Independently supervise and manage groups of participants.
  • Translate lesson plans into engaging learning experiences that create a fun and visually appealing environment.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the physical, social, and emotional development of participants.
  • Facilitate a safe and productive learning environment for all participants.
  • Model, enforce, teach, and develop age-appropriate social, physical, and emotional behaviors.
  • Employ positive behavior management strategies for disruptive and negative behaviors.
  • Demonstrate positive leadership and act as a positive role model to participants.
  • Abide by all compliance and safety protocols as outlined by the NYC Department of Health, NYC Department of Education, OCFS, DYCD, and UAU.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Matriculated college student or better from an accredited university or college preferred.
  • Knowledge of a particular subject area or specialty required such as but not limited to; STEAM, Art, Music, Various Organized Sports etc.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with children in a classroom setting, working with children less than 13 years of age.
  • Minimum 1 year of prior experience teaching or facilitating group activities, with children less than 13 years of age.
  • Must be culturally competent - ability to understand, be sensitive to the needs of, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures.
  • Must pass reference and background checks.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and mathematical skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and complete work independently.
  • Willing to take initiative and be flexible when needed.
  • Excels working in a collaborative environment to achieve target objects and outcomes.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
  • Ability to observe details at close range.
