About the Role

Lead UK public policy and political engagement on retail banking policy in Group Public Affairs, working closely with GPA leadership and managing senior stakeholder relationships internally and externally. Develop public policy proposals and execute a senior stakeholder engagement plan with relevant policymakers, politicians and trade bodies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the work of the Group Public Affairs team on UK retail banking public policy and legislative issues.
  • Track and analyse political and policy developments across the UK consumer agenda, anticipating impacts on the bank and customers.
  • Keep senior leaders ahead of emerging issues with timely insight, clear implications, and practical guidance.
  • Build and own strong relationships with senior stakeholders across RBW to inform robust, commercially grounded policy positions.
  • Develop clear policy positions and translate them into a structured programme of senior-leader engagement.
  • Produce high-quality, strategic briefings that equip senior leaders for political engagement.
  • Identify and coordinate opportunities for constructive external engagement that support strategic objectives and strengthen HSBC’s reputation.
  • Represent the bank confidently with policymakers, politicians and trade associations, communicating a compelling and balanced narrative.

Requirements

  • Solid understanding of UK public policy development and how the external political/regulatory environment affects retail banking.
  • Demonstrated capability to represent organisational interests externally, building and sustaining credible relationships in industry, political and consumer-focused forums.
  • Experience operating in a matrix organisation, working effectively across teams and functions.
  • Strong understanding of retail banking business lines and commercial drivers, or equivalent relevant financial services experience.
  • Proven ability to build strong internal relationships, communicating clearly and influencing senior leaders and technical experts.
  • Skilled at negotiating and aligning stakeholders to achieve agreed outcomes in a complex, fast-moving environment.
  • Experience as a “leader of peers”, coordinating and guiding subject matter experts across the Group.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex issues into clear, compelling messages for senior audiences.
