About the Role
Chime is seeking an engineering leader to manage and guide an AI & App Experience (AAX) engineering team. This role involves building the next generation of the Chime member experience, including Jade, an AI-powered financial assistant. The leader will manage a team of 4-5 engineers, focusing on hiring, talent development, and people management, while also staying hands-on with coding and shipping features, particularly those involving AI and LLMs.
Responsibilities
- Manage and develop a squad of 4-5 engineers, including hiring, 1:1s, career coaching, and performance management.
- Own end-to-end delivery for the squad, from sprint planning and commitments to service SLAs and operational health.
- Write and ship code, including authoring pull requests that are deployed to production.
- Be accountable for the squad's technical direction, architecture, and quality bar.
- Utilize AI coding agents and tooling to enhance personal and team leverage, establishing durable practices.
- Guide the design and delivery of LLM-powered capabilities, including agent experiences, evals, guardrails, and observability.
- Partner with Product, Design, Data Science, and Risk on scope, prioritization, and quarterly planning, identifying technical dependencies and capacity needs.
- Act as the squad's cross-functional technical point of contact, coordinating dependencies and leading technical discussions.
- Identify technical debt, advocate for sustainable engineering, and maintain code quality, performance, and operational health, including on-call and incident response.
- Build growth paths for engineers towards higher IC levels or future TLM roles.
- Contribute to broader AAX and Chime engineering initiatives as a member of the engineering leadership team.
Requirements
- 2+ years in people management responsibilities.
- Current, hands-on coding ability and the desire to continue coding.
- Track record of using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) to accelerate delivery and drive team adoption with measurable impact.
- AI-native fluency, building with LLMs and AI tooling and fostering this practice across the team.
- Familiarity with challenges of shipping LLM-powered products (agents, evals, prompt strategies, guardrails, observability) or a strong drive to learn quickly.
- Experience supporting and coaching team members on project execution, skill development, and career progression.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, with a history of partnering with Product, Design, Data Science, and other partners.
- Fascination with team and people thriving, interest in pushing technology, people, and organizational envelopes, and ability to motivate a team through aggressive schedules and goals.
- Enjoyment in learning and diving into the deepest levels of how things work.
- Experience with similar technologies: Python, Ruby, React Native, Distributed Systems, AWS services (data, compute), and Service Oriented Architectures.
