About the Role
We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to help build and shape the shared engineering capabilities for Our Future Health’s data platforms. This role offers a blend of hands-on software engineering and technical leadership, focusing on large-scale data systems and reusable tooling to assist multiple engineering teams in solving complex challenges.
Responsibilities
- Guide technical decisions in collaboration with product managers and engineering managers.
- Represent technology, architecture, and engineering in cross-functional project teams throughout the project lifecycle.
- Identify optimal solutions for challenges, communicate them to stakeholders, and collaborate on implementation.
- Act as a guiding mind for engineering and architecture within the business area, identifying areas for improvement.
- Lead decision-making on critical technical strategy and implementations affecting the business area.
- Identify and execute high-impact hands-on work where appropriate.
- Collaborate with partners and suppliers to integrate their systems.
- Support colleagues through pairing, peer reviews, coaching, and collaborative activities.
- Participate in live operations support rotations, monitoring live systems and reacting to incidents.
- Anticipate and prevent potential pipeline problems, developing short and long-term solutions.
- Stay informed about software engineering best practices and identify opportunities for adoption.
Requirements
- Led the architectural design of systems.
- Highly proficient in cloud engineering (preferably Azure; AWS and GCP).
- Demonstrable knowledge and experience in building solutions for moving and processing large amounts of data at pace and scale using cloud-native technologies (Kubernetes, Helm, Docker).
- Experience with storing, searching, and filtering large-scale data.
- Highly proficient working with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible).
- Highly proficient in Python.
- Experience with Spark, Databricks, data lakes/lakehouses.
- Knowledge of good data modeling and design patterns.
- In-depth knowledge of relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL) and familiarity with other data store types (blob, document, graph).
- Highly proficient in modern, agile development practices (code review, TDD, CI/CD, pairing) using tools like Git and GitHub.
- Experience in operationally managing software components/services post-launch, including observability, logging, error reporting, debugging, and live incident management.
- Experience using tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, New Relic etc.
- Experience working with sensitive personal data.
- Experience working in/with cross-functional teams consisting of engineers, product, UX, and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven ability to communicate with stakeholders and audiences at different levels.
- Understanding of operational, security, and legal factors in solution design, with the ability to articulate trade-offs.
- Experience working in small, growing organizations with a high degree of ambiguity.
- Strong understanding of software quality principles and practices.
- Experience in mentoring and coaching less experienced engineers.
- Comfortable facilitating technical discussions, encouraging collaboration, and providing direction.
