About the Role

This role involves building and evolving systems that enable edge hardware and cloud infrastructure to work together reliably at scale, even with unreliable network connections or device quirks. You will define the architecture for Sage's edge computing platform, tackle complex problems, and help set the technical bar for the engineering organization. You will also mentor other engineers and influence technical decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Shape the architecture of a fleet of edge devices and the cloud systems that orchestrate, monitor, and update them.
  • Address ambiguous and novel problems such as resident location modeling, fall detection, and sensor fusion.
  • Build diagnostic tooling to understand the behavior of remote hardware.
  • Perform remote troubleshooting, analyzing network, hardware, and software issues.
  • Collaborate with other Sage teams to deliver end-to-end solutions.
  • Review code, lead design discussions, and mentor less experienced engineers.
  • Advocate for better technical approaches.

Requirements

  • Professional experience working in complex backend systems, typically 7+ years.
  • Comfort and deep understanding of Linux/Unix environments beyond basic commands.
  • Demonstrated ability to debug and understand system failures.
  • In-depth knowledge in at least one programming language (e.g., Java, C++, Rust, Go, Python, C#) with strong computing fundamentals.
  • Ability to reason about memory, concurrency, and performance at a lower level.
  • Working knowledge of networking to diagnose connectivity issues without needing to look up fundamentals.
  • Demonstrable curiosity through side projects, open source contributions, home labs, or self-teaching.
  • Ability to manage complexity and deliver results.
  • Experience leading technical efforts from problem definition to outcome, including making tradeoffs under ambiguity.
