About the Role

EDC helps Canadian businesses succeed abroad by providing financial tools and expertise to explore new markets and reduce risks, aiming to build a better Canada and world through trade.

Responsibilities

• Participate in the entire transaction process, from development and structuring to negotiation and documentation.
• Identify underlying issues in files requiring risk mitigation and consideration of EDC's perspective and expertise.
• Draft legal documents.
• Address asset management issues (waivers, consents, and amendments) related to financing products.
• Provide legal advice on various legal matters related to EDC's operations, including EDC's rights and obligations under contracts, interpretation of internal documents and policies, and advice on authorization and compliance requirements.
• Solicit and manage external counsel (domestic and international).
• Review and comment on documents and recommendations from external counsel concerning transactions EDC is involved in or proposes to be involved in.
• Actively support EDC's operations and business and legal teams through collaboration and teamwork.

Requirements

• University degree in law.
• Membership in a provincial bar association and in good standing to practice law as a lawyer in all Canadian provinces and territories.
• At least 3 years (Legal Services 17) or 5 years (Legal Services 18) of relevant legal experience.
• Excellent communication skills (written and oral), including strong drafting skills.
• Established ability to effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously and a high volume of work and transactions.
• Proactively demonstrated ability to exercise law and mitigate risks in a dynamic business environment.
• High degree of insight and excellent decision-making ability, as well as a good sense of cooperation to seek input from colleagues within the Legal Services team or other EDC teams.
• Good persuasion and negotiation skills to address contentious and complex issues.
