About the Role

The Public Services Librarian is responsible for creating excellent patron experiences and delivering User First library services that meet customer needs in Literacy, Knowledge for Living, Well Being, and Community Building. This role involves providing information, programming, technology assistance, collection support, and community engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Create excellent customer experiences and serve as a key point of contact for patrons seeking information.
  • Provide information in-person, by telephone, and through digital services.
  • Use reference interview techniques to identify patron information needs and match them with services.
  • Guide patrons to locate and evaluate relevant information from various sources and formats.
  • Refer patrons to relevant community services and resources.
  • Advise patrons on books and other resources matching their preferences and learning styles.
  • Plan, prepare, promote, and deliver library programs and visits.
  • Support system-wide programs and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with community service partners to provide learning and information access opportunities.
  • Provide information to patrons about collections.
  • Act as a system resource in an assigned area of specialization.
  • Share community input and feedback regarding collections with the Collections Services Department.
  • Support the collections acquisitions process by reading reviews and suggesting purchases.
  • Assist with collection maintenance.
  • Assess and accept suitable donations of collection materials.
  • Promote collections through resource lists, displays, and targeted outreach.
  • Write blogs for the LPL website.
  • Support the delivery of Lending Services by understanding operations and procedures.
  • Provide a full range of lending services, including handling fines and fees.
  • Encourage responsible borrowing by explaining policies and educating the public.
  • Support patrons in accessing and using the Library’s digital collections, website, and the Internet.
  • Assist patrons with Library technology, including computers, printers, scanners, and photocopiers.
  • Support the learning and use of Library creative spaces and technologies.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve routine hardware and software problems.
  • Keep current in library and information science and relevant technologies.
  • Represent the Library in the community through public speaking, media events, and participation in community meetings.
  • Build and maintain a network of community contacts and partners.
  • Build relationships with individuals and groups to facilitate collaboration.
  • Work collaboratively with staff to support the Library as a community and cultural place.
  • Respond to and resolve patron comments, compliments, and complaints.
  • Act in emergencies and schedule/assign/monitor daily work in the absence of the Supervisor.
  • Monitor the work of Pages as assigned.
  • Assist with the orientation and training of staff.
  • Prepare miscellaneous reports and input statistical information.
  • Act as Staff Member in Charge (SMIC) as assigned.
  • Participate in location planning and system-wide teams.
  • Collaborate with other LPL departments and contracted services to resolve issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A Master of Library and Information Science from an accredited institution, or equivalent.
  • Six to twelve months of successful, relevant experience in a Librarian or customer service role.
  • Proven excellent, proactive customer service skills, including the ability to provide personalized customer service.
  • Understanding of the roles of the public library and the professional librarian.
  • Awareness of current trends in library services, programs, technologies, and resources.
  • Proven knowledge of the Internet and office software applications.
  • Demonstrated high level of competence with digital collections, resources, and technologies.
  • Proven ability to promote the library through community outreach activities, displays, and tours.
  • Experience in relationship building with cultural groups, service providers, neighborhood groups, and community residents.
  • Demonstrated decision-making skills and the ability to exercise good judgment in service delivery.
  • Effective communicator with good written and verbal skills.
  • Comfortable in making presentations both inside and outside the library.
  • Ability to work effectively outside of traditional library activities and settings.
  • Positive attitude and ability to work in a complex and changing environment.
  • Highly developed organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Evidence of a strong work ethic and self-motivation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to learn and develop professionally.
  • Availability to work evening and weekend hours on a regular basis.
