About the Role
Evaluate mortgage loan applications and make sound lending decisions that balance member service with responsible risk management. This position reviews creditworthiness, income, assets, collateral, property value, repayment ability, and supporting mortgage documentation while applying underwriting standards and ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and Credit Union policies.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate mortgage loan applications and make sound lending decisions within established lending authority while balancing member service and responsible risk management.
- Analyze credit, income, assets, collateral, and supporting documentation to determine creditworthiness and repayment ability.
- Review loan files for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with Credit Union policies and regulatory requirements.
- Communicate underwriting decisions, conditions, and documentation requirements while partnering with Lending and Loan Operations teams to ensure an efficient lending process.
- Manage mortgage pipeline activity and meet established service level expectations.
- Serve as a mortgage lending resource by educating and supporting Member Service, Lending, and Loan Operations staff on underwriting decisions, documentation requirements, and lending policies.
- Provide backup support for consumer loan underwriting as needed.
- Support continuous improvement through process enhancements, policy updates, staff training, and ongoing professional development.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree in Business, Finance, or a related field preferred.
- Three (3) years of mortgage underwriting experience, including lending authority.
- Secondary market experience preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain lending decisions clearly and professionally.
- Experience with loan origination systems and other financial services software.
- Willingness to cross-train and support consumer lending functions as needed.
