About the Role
The Director – Public Relations is responsible for media operations at Museum ceremonies and events, managing media and production shoots, reactive and proactive media relations, driving positive publicity for the organization’s signature festivals, coordinating with the Museum’s PR agency and serving as a primary brand steward. The position will be a key contributor to overall department strategy and will develop, review, edit and execute content across multiple platforms.
Responsibilities
- Write media materials such as press releases, advisories, listings, and one-pagers.
- Develop talking points/messaging, social copy, website content, and video scripts.
- Edit grant proposals, written materials across all departments, newsletters, eblasts, exhibit copy, collateral, and advertising.
- Manage PR agency day-to-day operations and coordination.
- Coordinate media ops and scheduling with the Senior Space Adviser.
- Liaise with internal departments regarding needs and activities.
- Serve as department liaison with TikTok agency regarding strategy and scripts.
- Review social content calendar.
- Develop and implement comprehensive communications plans for new exhibits and programs.
- Provide message and media training to spokespersons.
- Field and vet media requests.
- Drive media attendance for and manage media on site for festivals, ceremonies, programs, and special events.
- Proactively pitch the Museum’s programs and people.
- Maintain a pulse on media trends and tools.
- Coordinate pre-shoot logistics including negotiations, contracts, and approvals.
- Provide on-site staffing for paid shoots.
- Develop and further relationships with media, Military PAOs, and PR departments for partner events.
- Participate in and contribute to internal committees, including Programming and Website committees.
- Ensure consistency of tone and adherence to brand guidelines, messaging, and Intrepid style guide across all Museum content and distribution channels.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Communications or a related field.
- 5+ years of relevant experience.
- Expertise in media operations.
- Hands-on experience managing media and production shoots.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style.
- Experience managing a junior staff member.
- Experience working across multiple teams and departments.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and organization skills.
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as necessary.
