About the Role

The Level A Fleet Mechanic/Technician is the top-tier technical expert responsible for advanced diagnostics, complex repairs, and setting the standard for safety, quality, and productivity. This role partners with maintenance leadership to ensure fleet uptime and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead diagnosis and resolution of complex engine performance, emissions, and electrical system issues.
  • Plan and execute major component work including engine repairs, transmission R&R, frame-off repairs, and hydraulic rebuilds.
  • Serve as the go-to technical resource for lower-level technicians, providing on-the-job training and coaching.
  • Assist in training on diagnostic software, new equipment technology, and company maintenance standards.
  • Analyze repeat repairs and failure trends to recommend improvements to maintenance strategies.
  • Ensure all work complies with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, BIC, DEP, and other relevant regulations.
  • Perform and sign off on critical inspections, including PDI, PM, Annual inspections, and accident damage assessments.
  • Partner with Operations to minimize downtime and prioritize critical repairs.
  • Provide feedback on equipment condition and chronic issues affecting uptime or safety.
  • Help plan daily shop workload and allocate jobs based on technician skill level.
  • Assist in specifying parts, evaluating vendors, and supporting warranty recovery.
  • Support audits and regulatory reviews as the technical representative.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of proven hands-on experience as a diesel mechanic.
  • Experience includes advanced diagnostics and major component overhaul.
  • Ability to perform complete rebuilds, diagnose complex issues, and advise on all vehicle and equipment systems.
  • CDL Class B or A with air brake endorsement required or strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated expert-level knowledge of Yellow Iron and Heavy Truck.
  • Demonstrated expert-level knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, and powertrain systems.
  • Demonstrated expert-level knowledge of diagnostic software, scan tools, and OEM service information.
  • Proven track record of performing complex diagnostics and repairs independently.
  • Must provide own professional-grade tools.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required.
  • Experience in a lead or senior technician role in a refuse, municipal, or large private fleet environment preferred.
  • Experience with CNG/LNG, hybrid, or EV drivetrains for heavy vehicles preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to coach, influence, and drive standards preferred.
