About the Role

This role provides a fantastic opportunity to shape the direction of a new journal and act as its ambassador by engaging with biology research communities. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in creating and implementing the journal's strategy, maximizing its visibility, scientific standing, quality, and the impact of published research. The Chief Editor will manage internal and external editorial teams, requiring the ability to form and lead a collaborative and focused team for the journal's continued success.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a high-performing editorial team, directing workloads, building team capability, and ensuring manuscripts are managed according to journal policies, quality standards, and publication timelines.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership through building effective teams, developing talent, and directing work.
  • Recruit, onboard, and engage external Editorial Board members, building professional networks and fostering collaborative relationships to support the journal's strategic objectives.
  • Demonstrate success in building networks and influencing diverse stakeholders to drive editorial excellence.
  • Develop and follow a high-level strategic plan for the growth and development of the journal.
  • Determine and take responsibility for the content published in the journal, ensuring growth in both quality and quantity.
  • Handle original research papers and work closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review.
  • Act as the main voice representing the journal within external research communities, meeting regularly with authors, reviewers, and external editorial board members to understand their priorities and needs.
  • Work with multiple internal and external stakeholders to ensure shared goals are achieved.
  • Build trusted relationships with both internal colleagues and external academic stakeholders.
  • Manage competing priorities and stakeholder expectations.
  • Communicate clearly and constructively across global teams.

Requirements

  • Educated to PhD level (or equivalent) in a relevant field.
  • Broad interests and knowledge in the field of biomedical technologies.
  • Demonstrable editorial experience in the selection and processing of manuscripts.
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills.
  • A can-do approach to problem-solving.
  • Influential communicator with the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels and across different portfolios.
  • Willing to travel occasionally and represent BMC/Springer Nature at external events.
  • Knowledge of current challenges and opportunities in scientific publishing.
  • Experience in management, supervision, or mentorship of junior team members (desirable).
  • Ability to build trust and credible professional relationships with members of the scientific community (desirable).
  • Experience in strategic thinking and journal development (desirable).
