About the Role
Working remotely in London with others in The London Free Press newsroom, you meet the twin demands of speed and quality as a multimedia journalist able to move up a fast learning curve. An enterprising self-starter and team player, you have a sense for stories that resonate with London’s diverse readership. The position requires working to tight deadlines, in clear, concise writing that engages readers, covering a wide range of news, entertainment and other subjects. Critical is the ability to use digital tools to break and develop stories, reflecting readers' real-time interests.
Responsibilities
- Report and write stories – and be able to shoot photos for them – for digital and print audiences, and tailor content to meet those platforms’ varying needs.
- Have and develop local story ideas daily, a job essential along with the flexibility to quickly pivot to other newsroom priorities to meet changing needs.
- Use social media and other digital tools to find out what’s breaking and what Londoners in real time are talking about and which quickly needs our attention.
- Cultivate sources to break stories and help set the news agenda.
- File video clips for digital platforms; work with digital teams to create interactive content and other multimedia elements that both engage and enrich readers.
Requirements
- A journalism school graduate or candidate from a related field.
- Newsroom experience is an asset.
- Must be able to quickly layer and prioritize needs to move up a learning curve.
- Flexible to write effectively in breaking news, features and short form, a job essential, along with non-traditional story formats such as explainers and Q/As.
- Hungry to make the most of a chance to work in a daily newsroom with top-notch journalists and eager to show what you can do to help the room.
- A digger, not satisfied with pat answers; always looking for hidden story angles and with a talent, or developing one, for explanatory journalism.
- A reporter interested not just in what happened or is happening, but also why and how, with the ability to concisely convey that added meaning to readers.
- Experience and strength in video or podcast presentation is an asset.
- A valid driver’s licence and access to a personal vehicle are also assets.
