About the Role
The Museum of Modern Art is seeking a temporary Curatorial Assistant for the Department of Painting and Sculpture. This role supports senior curators in managing the museum's extensive collection of modern and contemporary art, contributing to exhibitions, publications, and scholarship.
Responsibilities
- Assist senior curators with research, planning, organization, and execution of exhibitions.
- Write, edit, and produce museum publications and exhibition materials, including wall texts and object labels.
- Research and catalog the museum collection and archives related to exhibition projects and respond to inquiries.
- Provide exhibition support, including bibliographic research, loan correspondence, publication support, website development, and public program planning.
- Assist in maintaining the collection and loans, coordinating with custodial, registration, conservation, and preparation teams.
- Liaise with external individuals and organizations, as well as internal museum departments.
- Support research and preparation for potential acquisitions, including biographical and bibliographical research, file maintenance, and communication with art world professionals.
- Stay informed about current developments in the field through visits and publications, making recommendations to senior staff.
- Conduct daily inspections of collection galleries and works on view in temporary exhibitions, and assist with follow-up for any damage or deterioration.
- Respond to visitor inquiries and conduct gallery tours as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Master's or PhD degree in art history, or equivalent work experience.
- Expertise in 21st-century American and European art history.
- One to two years of experience in a museum setting or supporting loan exhibitions and publications.
- Superior research, writing, and editing skills.
- Professional proficiency in a second language.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Working knowledge of Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with The Museum System (TMS) is helpful.
- Proficiency in at least one language in addition to English is required.
- On-site presence required five days a week during the initial 90-day employment period, then four days per week onsite thereafter, subject to change and potential requirement for five days onsite in some weeks.
