About the Role
The System Protection Engineer works on electric substation design projects for high-voltage utility systems and renewable energy interconnection projects, applying engineering knowledge to fulfill principal duties and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure project milestones are met.
Responsibilities
- Performs all system protection and communication design aspects for high voltage (4kV – 230kV) and EHV (above 230kV) substation projects.
- Develops Protection and Control Specifications, SCADA and Communications Specifications, I/O Mapping, Points Lists and Associated Mapping, Relay Settings, Event Analysis.
- Performs Short Circuit, Arc Flash, Relay Coordination, and CT Saturation studies.
- Performs QA/QC for One-Line Diagrams, Three-Line Diagrams, Current and Potential Schematics, Control Schematics, Alarm Schematics, SCADA and Communications Schematics.
- Provides technical support for Procurement, Construction (Testing and Commissioning), and Active Coordination.
- Works seamlessly with and provides guidance to the P&C Design Team.
- Provides technical support to field personnel responsible for applying and testing relay settings.
- Coordinates efforts with all project team members by identifying coordination needs within specific disciplines.
- Follows department processes and procedures.
- Continues strong customer service.
- Provides transparent and honest feedback to the project team.
- Helps develop approaches to accommodate unique client requests.
- Advises Management about how to maximize ROI for the team.
- Mentors and trains entry-level professionals.
- Focuses on the production of high-quality work and supports continuous improvement efforts.
- Works in a fast-paced environment on multiple projects.
- Assists with the identification of fundamental client interests and may determine key clients.
- Communicates client interests and drivers to project team members and develops approaches to accommodate these concerns.
- Serves as a technical specialist for system protection and communication, providing consultation and guidance.
- Removes impediments obstructing the engineering team from achieving its goals.
- Attends all client technical review meetings.
- Acts as project technical lead and QA/QC lead as needed.
Requirements
- Requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from a recognized accredited program.
- Minimum of 8 years related work experience in the field of high voltage substation design – System Protection and Communication.
- PE License.
- Proficient using ASPEN One Liner, ETAP, Power Factory, CYME Dist., or similar programs.
- Strong familiarity with NERC System Protection Coordination Requirements, including NERC PRC-001 and NERC PRC-027.
- Strong familiarity with the NEC and National Electrical Safety Code.
- Good knowledge of the industry and technology trends specific to substations.
- Proficient with wind and solar farm SCADA and Network Requirements and associated designs (Preferred).
- Proficient in load flow and reactive compensation studies (Preferred).
- Proficient in the use of PSSE for transmission planning and analysis (Preferred).
- Experience with proposal writing and project estimating (Preferred).
- Working knowledge of scheduling and project controls processes (Preferred).
