About the Role

The Maintenance Custodian is responsible for building maintenance projects across all family shelters, ensuring timely completion of work orders and maintaining a safe, sanitary environment. This role involves a variety of tasks including painting, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing repairs, as well as assisting with cleaning and groundskeeping.

Responsibilities

  • Report building maintenance, repair, and special project needs to the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Immediately report major building repairs, hazards, defects, and supply needs to the Superintendent.
  • Rotate amongst all shelters as needed to complete building repairs and needs, including painting, electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, and landscaping.
  • Promptly complete all assigned work orders.
  • Take responsibility for the proper care and maintenance of tools, supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist with ground cleanup and snow removal as assigned.
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary workspace and follow all OSHA regulations.
  • Drive agency vehicles as needed and accurately track mileage.
  • Clean and sanitize assigned vacant units within the DHS regulatory timeline of 4 hours post-discharge.
  • Promptly clean all public areas and workspaces as assigned.
  • Empty trash from the compactor as assigned.
  • Properly clean and maintain floors, including stripping, waxing, buffing, mopping, and vacuuming.
  • Assist in moving furniture and belongings of clients into and out of units.
  • Work on weekends as scheduled.
  • Assume the same position at other shelters as needed at the discretion of management.
  • Undertake other assignments and tasks as added at the discretion of management.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience working with a disadvantaged population is a plus.
  • Ability to lift at least fifty pounds.
  • Ability to work at least an eight-hour shift primarily standing and moving.
  • Ability to take and follow instructions and follow through with assigned tasks.
  • Familiarity with basic cleaning equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting.
  • Technical knowledge of mechanical systems operated within the physical plant.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License required.
  • Willingness to become certified as a Fire Safety Coordinator is strongly desired.
