About the Role

SMBC is seeking an Associate to join the Office of the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) Business Management team. The individual will develop executive-quality presentations, reports, and dashboards that distill complex risk information into clear, concise, and actionable insights. The role requires identifying key issues, connecting risk themes across functions, and tailoring messaging for various audiences. The Associate will also support budget management, governance routines, committee materials, and risk reporting process improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop executive-level materials that distill, render, and visualize complex risk issues concisely, accurately, and in an audience-appropriate manner.

  • Support recurring and ad hoc CRO reporting, including materials for senior management, Board, Head Office, regulatory meetings, and risk committees.
  • Assist with budget management, headcount tracking, dashboard visuals, and reporting routines supporting CRO Office priorities and organizational planning.
  • Coordinate inputs across risk verticals, challenge unclear or incomplete content, and ensure timely completion of high-quality materials.
  • Support risk committee processes, including agenda/material preparation, meeting minutes, action item tracking, and governance documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve reporting processes, data quality, visual consistency, and overall effectiveness of risk communications.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in a risk management function at a large U.S. bank/FBO, consulting firm serving the banking sector, U.S. banking regulator, or comparable financial services environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including nuance in writing and the ability to convert complex content into clear PowerPoint presentations and executive-ready narratives.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, with close attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to identify key issues, implications, and required actions.
  • Ability to articulate challenges, decisions, options, pros/cons, resolution paths, next steps, and accountabilities in a structured and concise manner.
  • Working understanding of enterprise risk management and major risk disciplines, including Credit, Market, Liquidity/Treasury, Operational, Model, Technology/Data/Cyber, and Compliance/Regulatory risk.
  • Ability to understand key risk concepts and translate them into accessible, contextually appropriate content for senior management and other non-technical audiences.
  • Interest in connecting risk information across functions and assessing how market, macroeconomic, regulatory, and business developments may affect the organization’s risk profile.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and diplomacy in working with internal departments, senior management, Head Office, and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Independent worker and self-starter who is solution-oriented, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to manage multiple time-sensitive deliverables.
