About the Role
Serves as the firm's subject matter expert for retirement plan documents, providing independent interpretation of plan provisions, ERISA, and Internal Revenue Code requirements and determining their application across the firm's book of business. Designs and implements plan structures, leads plan design discussions with sponsors and advisors, and translates design decisions into document, system, and administrative requirements. Leads firm-wide document initiatives, including regulatory amendments and pre-approved document restatement cycles, determining scope, approach, and execution from initiation through completion. Provides technical oversight, guidance, training, and final escalation support to Plan Consulting, Compliance, Processing/Onboarding, and Strategic Relationships teams.
Responsibilities
- Applies plan provisions, ERISA, and Internal Revenue Code requirements across the firm’s book of business.
- Independently interprets and resolves complex, non-routine document issues, including discrepancies among plan documents, system configurations, and plan operations.
- Establishes and maintains firm-wide document standards, templates, and drafting guidelines, including approval of exceptions to standard provisions.
- Provides technical guidance, reviews and approves plan document work to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance.
- Serves as the final escalation point for complex document issues.
- Independently designs plan structures and discusses directly with plan sponsors and their advisors and finalizes recommended plan provisions.
- Translates design decisions into document, system, and administrative requirements and directs the handoff to Plan Consulting and Processing/Onboarding to ensure the plan is implemented as designed.
- Monitors, interprets and implements legislative and regulatory changes (including SECURE 2.0 and IRS pre-approved document restatement cycles) affecting plan documents.
- Leads firm-wide amendment and restatement projects from impact assessment through completion.
- Develops and delivers technical training and guidance on plan documents and regulatory changes.
- Maintains related procedures and reference materials.
- Evaluates and enhances plan document systems, workflows, and tools to improve accuracy, consistency, and scalability.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree and eight (8) years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Advanced knowledge of 401(k) and 403(b) plan design, document provisions, compliance, and fiduciary role-related topics.
- Ability to independently interpret ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code, and IRS and DOL guidance, determine their application to plan documents, and establish company-wide documentation standards and plan operations.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and reach defensible conclusions in ambiguous and non-standard situations.
- Ability to lead plan design consultations with new plan sponsors and their advisors translating design objectives into compliant plan document and operational requirements.
- Ability to independently scope, plan, and drive firm-wide document projects to completion across multiple departments and locations ensuring timely and accurate completion.
- Ability to develop and deliver technical training and guidance to staff of varying experience levels.
- Demonstrated ability to identify, investigate, and resolve inconsistencies in plan documentation and operations, with sound judgment in determining when escalation is warranted.

Salary/Compensations
- $71,160.00 - $94,903.00
