About the Role
As an SDE 3 on the Fiat/Payments team, you will own critical, high-throughput payment microservices end-to-end, designing, building, scaling, and operating systems that move real money across multiple currencies and jurisdictions. This senior individual contributor role involves driving architecture decisions, mentoring engineers, and staying hands-on in code daily, with a focus on regulatory and global banking-partner requirements.
Responsibilities
- Own payment microservices end-to-end, including design, build, deploy, and operation of Node.js services for orders, payments, reconciliation, virtual accounts, and payout orchestration.
- Design for correctness and failure, ensuring systems are idempotent, retry-safe, and reconciliable with traceable, auditable, and recoverable transactions.
- Architect for scale and resilience in a distributed microservices environment, making service-boundary and build-vs-buy decisions.
- Drive integrations with banking and payment partners, managing API contracts, webhook handling, and reconciliation logic across various payment rails.
- Collaborate with Risk and Compliance teams on KYC, AML, and fraud-control touchpoints within the payment flow.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins for automated testing and deployment strategies like blue/green or canary releases.
- Operate infrastructure on AWS, contributing to infrastructure-as-code, monitoring, alerting, and on-call runbooks.
- Optimize the data layer in MongoDB, focusing on schema design and query performance, and implement caching and rate-limiting strategies with Redis.
- Participate in on-call rotations for payment-critical services, including incident response and postmortems.
- Lead technical roadmaps, breaking down complex initiatives into manageable milestones and driving consensus across teams.
- Mentor mid-level engineers, review code and designs, and contribute to hiring and team growth.
- Uphold security and compliance best practices for handling sensitive data in a regulated environment.
Requirements
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant backend/distributed systems experience.
- Prior experience in fintech, payments, on-and-offramp provision, or banking infrastructure is strongly preferred.
- Strong hands-on expertise in Node.js (TypeScript preferred) for production-grade backend services.
- Deep experience with MongoDB, including schema design, aggregation pipelines, indexing strategy, and performance tuning.
- Proficiency with Redis for caching, distributed locks, rate limiting, and pub/sub patterns.
- Proven experience designing and operating microservices architectures, including inter-service communication, service discovery, and API contract design.
- Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines with hands-on experience using Jenkins.
- Working knowledge of AWS infrastructure, including ECS/EKS/Lambda, VPC networking, IAM, S3, RDS, and CloudWatch.
- Strong grasp of distributed systems fundamentals such as idempotency, eventual consistency, retries/backoff, circuit breaking, and failure isolation.
- Track record of owning a service or domain end-to-end in production, including on-call responsibility.
- Excellent written communication skills for authoring design documents and explaining technical trade-offs.
