About the Role
Operates various types of power construction equipment, such as backhoe, loaders, and crack sealing machines, used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of roads and bridges.
Responsibilities
- Operate various pieces of heavy construction equipment or trucks on a regularly assigned basis.
- Check for proper functioning of equipment during operation and make needed adjustments.
- Perform preventative maintenance on equipment, including operation pre-checks for proper fluids and lubricants.
- Inform supervisor of repair needs or make field repairs to equipment.
- May occasionally operate or train on equipment normally assigned to a higher or lower classification.
- Perform labor duties as a member of a road/bridge crew as necessary.

- Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

- Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Must have the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Must have the ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and vibration.
- Frequently exposed to high, precarious places.
- Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
