About the Role
The Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP) provides quality education from pre-kindergarten to grade 12 in French as a first language in a minority setting. The CSAP plays an active role in developing cultural identity and promoting the French language within the Acadian and Francophone context of Nova Scotia.
Responsibilities
- Assist students with feeding if necessary.
- Assist students with hygiene if necessary.
- Assist students with toileting if necessary.
- Administer medications and perform necessary medical care procedures under school direction and in compliance with board and ministry policies.
- Assist students with mobility throughout the school day, including lifting, positioning, exercises, and support as described in the IEP or physiotherapy/occupational therapy plan.
- Assist students with boarding and disembarking school transport vehicles.
- Accompany students during educational programs in the community when necessary.
- Supervise students to ensure their safety.
- Assist students with their assistive devices if necessary.
- Assist students with dressing and undressing, prioritizing student independence and autonomy.
- Contribute to encouraging students' emotional, well-being, and autonomy development.
- Encourage students to develop greater self-esteem and dignity.
- Encourage positive interactions among all students.
- Motivate students and encourage their participation.
- Contribute to the implementation of behavior management plans, including de-escalation, prosocial skills, conflict resolution, and calming strategies.
- Participate in behavior management plan meetings and other required meetings.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Recognized post-secondary program leading to a diploma or certificate, including a formal practical training internship.
- Professional qualifications effectively required by the position (e.g., ASL, PECS, Braille, ability to lift and position a student).
- Specific training or certification in healthcare support (e.g., First Aid, CPR/CPR-C, emergency de-escalation and prevention strategies).
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
- Knowledge of child and youth growth and development stages.
- Good interaction and positive relationship building with children and youth.
- Knowledge of atypical conditions (e.g., autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy).
- Basic computer application knowledge.
- Good communication skills.
- Positive behavior management strategies.
- Problem-solving skills.
- Positive contribution as a member of the school community.
- Knowledge of confidentiality and privacy protocols.
- Sensitivity and respect for diversity.
- A judicial check (vulnerable sector) and a child abuse registry check will be required before starting the position.
