About the Role

The Early Years Consultant provides advanced knowledge, leadership, and coordination of public health workforce development in the early years. This role strengthens skills, competencies, and achievement among public health team members focused on the early years, offering expert advice to ensure consistent and quality practice across the zone. The position guides staff to align with standards, operational requirements, and scientific developments, while also recommending quality initiatives and work practice changes to the manager.

Responsibilities

Strengthen skills, competencies, and achievement amongst public health team members focused on the early years.
Provide expert-level advice to support and coordinate consistent and quality practice across the zone.
Provide guidance, coordination, and direction to staff to ensure alignment with established standards of practice, operational requirements, and scientific developments.
Provide recommendations to the manager on quality initiatives and work practice changes or work force distribution to optimize efficiency.
Work closely with public health staff, zone leadership, other NSHA consultants and leaders, local stakeholders, and system and external partners to ensure consistent, effective, and positive health outcomes for children aged 0-5.
Demonstrate commitment to equity, social justice, and self-determination to create supportive environments for the early years.
Collaborate with system and external partners, identify and monitor key indicators, and support knowledge exchange across the health system and other sectors.
Monitor trends and gather local evidence to inform process and operational improvements to early years programming across the zone.
Provide leadership and advanced knowledge in programs, policies, standards, models, and strategies to promote and support the development of healthy development to reduce health inequities in the early years.

Requirements

Baccalaureate degree in public health sciences, nutrition, health education and health promotion, nursing, early childhood or relevant field with 5-7 years relevant experience.
Masters in public health, or equivalent with 3-5 years relevant experience.
Equivalent combination of education and 7 years progressive leadership experience may be considered.
Eligible for registration with a professional body as appropriate.
Experience in planning, development, and evaluation of public health programs, services, and initiatives based on community assessments, data, and best practice models for the early years.
Demonstrated success in building strategic partnerships, networks, coalitions, and collaborative working relationships with a variety of internal and external partners to support early years work.
Knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations including the NS Health Protection Act, NS Health Authorities Act etc.
Demonstrated proficiency in LEADS.
Demonstrated high standards of ethics, integrity, respect, accountability, and upholding the public interest, and ability to use them effectively in decision-making.
Leadership skills consisting of team building, conflict resolution, goal setting, coaching, mentoring, delegation, and change-leadership.
