About the Role
This role supports the Access, Inclusion and Participation Service within the Children and Young People Directorate at Lewisham Council. It ensures the Council fulfills its obligations for inclusive education by meeting key priorities within the Lewisham Inclusion Strategy, such as reducing exclusion and supporting statutory assessments.
Responsibilities
- Advise and assist in the development and implementation of appropriate behaviour management strategies to provide an inclusive environment.
- Liaise with schools and relevant agencies to feedback information regarding pupils being supported.
- Plan and deliver personalised programmes to improve targeted pupils' presentations and ability to engage confidently in mainstream schools.
- Support children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties and their families through high-quality outreach.
- Monitor pupils, and assess, record, and report on their achievement, progress, and development.
- Work with school staff, pupils, and parents/carers to ensure consistency and optimal outcomes for pupils in mainstream schools.
- Plan and deliver training to school staff and other professionals on inclusive practice.
- Commit to continuous professional development.
- Keep up-to-date records of all current pupils.
- Provide INSET in mainstream schools when required.
- Act as an ambassador for the Outreach Inclusion Service (OIS) to ensure positive and effective responses to local and national initiatives.
Requirements
- Knowledge of the additional educational needs of children and young people with social and emotional difficulties in mainstream schools.
- Knowledge of the theoretical framework of appropriate interventions for children with social and emotional difficulties in mainstream schools.
- Knowledge of current and impending Special Educational Needs legislation and its relevance to pupils with social and emotional difficulties.
- Knowledge of classroom organisation and teaching strategies to facilitate curriculum access for children and young people with social and emotional difficulties in mainstream school settings.
- Ability to advise teachers, learning support assistants, and parents on effective and relevant learning strategies.
- Significant experience of supporting children with social and emotional difficulties in school settings.
- Previous experience in a similar role.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Must be a hardworking, enthusiastic person with a pro-active approach to work.
- The job is subject to an enhanced DBS check.
