About the Role

The primary focus of this position is to independently review, organize, and edit legislation, and to collaborate with municipal clients in the preparation of new Codes.

Responsibilities

  • Clarify project deliverables with clients and negotiate changes as necessary.
  • Plan projects to efficiently meet client needs and budgets.
  • Perform regular client management and milestone follow-up for assigned projects.
  • Communicate schedules and timelines internally and externally.
  • Review client notes, memos, and letters for background information and special instructions, and create project notes.
  • Determine the impact of legislation on the Code.
  • Communicate pertinent project information to other functions.
  • Communicate with clients via phone, written contact, teleconference, and on-site visits as needed.
  • Resolve conflicts and solve problems.
  • Edit and copyread content.
  • Review Proposed Table of Contents, Disposition Lists, and Derivation Tables, making necessary modifications.
  • Ensure accuracy of amendment insertion and histories.
  • Create or revise effective section titles.
  • Edit content for style, including statutory citations, grammar, and internal conflicts.
  • Check, create, or revise cross-references in the text.
  • Check statutory references in new legislation.
  • Add editor's notes.
  • Identify missing wording in legislation.
  • Prepare draft questions for client submission.
  • Finalize Codes for publication, including Disposition List and Derivation Table.
  • Create Adopting Ordinances and supporting documents.
  • Implement client decisions (ATAC).
  • Implement report decisions and track with historical notation (ATAC).
  • Create Schedule A to track substantive revisions.
  • Ensure accuracy of manuscript histories and amendment insertion.
  • Compare legislation to state statutes and other legislation to identify conflicts, inconsistencies, and duplications.
  • Review fees, penalties, and missing information.
  • Prepare Editorial and Legal Analysis questions for client review.
  • Facilitate editorial conferences, including on-site, as necessary.
  • Review and triage client decisions to create instructions for Editorial Assistants.
  • Review the sort of legislation and finalize organization.
  • Analyze and identify issues related to legislation organization.
  • Identify missing legislation and information.
  • Identify obsolete material.
  • Prepare Organizational Analysis report and proposed Table of Contents for client review.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds occasionally.
  • Visual acuity to read printed and digital materials.
  • Auditory ability to communicate effectively in person and over the phone.
  • May need to climb stairs in a multi-level office building.
  • Must be able to work in a standard office environment with artificial lighting and climate control.
