About the Role

Wells Fargo is seeking a Senior Counsel to join the global Banking team in London, supporting business in EMEA and APAC with a focus on general banking and finance, including asset-based lending, receivables, and trade financing. The role involves structuring and documenting transactions, building relationships with external law firms, and supporting business growth.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Banking team in EMEA and APAC, focusing on lending, capital markets, trade and receivables products, and payment services & treasury management.
  • Focus primarily on supporting general banking and finance work, including asset-based lending and receivables and trade financing.
  • Work closely with commercial banking lines of business in structuring and documenting transactions with clients.
  • Build relationships with outside law firm partners.
  • Support current business in region and enable future structural and product adjacencies to drive growth.
  • Structure and document a wide range of general banking, receivables, and trade-related structures with business stakeholders.
  • Advise on and identify legal issues, risks, and mitigants within complex transaction documentation suites.
  • Instruct and liaise with external counsel as required.
  • Work independently with lines of business to develop and grow their businesses.
  • Provide creative and problem-solving legal input to new product and new initiative development.
  • Assist with relevant internal Wells Fargo approval committees and procedures.
  • Work with other functional stakeholders, including Compliance and wider Risk functions in EMEA/APAC and the US.
  • Assist lines of business and regulatory colleagues in the Legal Department with advice regarding licensing and regulation of supported products in region.
  • Communicate and collaborate on legal work and associated risks with other members of the global Banking Team.
  • Effectively manage own workflow, prioritization, and legal spend tracking.
  • Collaborate closely with other banking lawyers in EMEA, APAC, and the US.

Requirements

  • Duly qualified lawyer admitted to practice law in England & Wales, the United States, other common-law or European jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of around 5 years post-qualification experience in either private practice, in-house, or ideally both.

Skills

  • Extensive experience advising and representing international financial institutions in general banking, lending, and trade-related matters.
  • Experience advising on regulatory and compliance-based issues.
  • Good working knowledge of international standard trade documentation and LMA/LSTA loan documentation and market standards.
  • Good technical knowledge of regional markets and relevant laws for lending, banking, receivables, and trade financial products.
  • Proven ability to analyze legal and regulatory issues and provide effective advice on complex legal matters.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with standard AI tools.
  • Ability to self-start, effectively organize and prioritize multiple workstreams and internal client requests.
  • Ability to escalate legal issues effectively in a proactive and timely manner.
  • Ability to work effectively in a complex environment with a high degree of collaboration.
  • Effective in building partnerships.
  • Ability to work effectively with multiple functions as part of project teams for the success of the wider team.
