About the Role
The New Work Development Coordinator supports the day-to-day operations of the Public Theater's New Work Development department, serving as a direct point of contact for artists and a liaison between the department and other theater departments. The role reports to the Director of New Work Development and works closely with the Associate Director.
Responsibilities
- Update the dramaturgy pathway tracker, commissions tracker, and script reading database.
- Participate in and take meeting minutes for departmental meetings, strategic planning sessions, and retreats.
- Coordinate a team of script readers, including selection, workload tracking, hours, and payments.
- Track and process departmental invoices and reimbursements.
- Serve as a point of contact for playwrights in residence, under commission, and developing new work.
- Read and evaluate scripts for new work development and provide recommendations.
- Review script acquisition practices and draft response letters in collaboration with directors.
- Generate and track scouting reports for the New Work Development department.
- Coordinate organizational logistics for the Emerging Writers Group, Judith Champion New Work Series, and Brooklyn College residencies.
- Assist in producing the Judith Champion New Work Series and Emerging Writers Group Spotlight Series.
- Support the Producing department with script/program printing, guest lists, and rehearsal room setup.
- Facilitate and schedule Watch Me Work sessions.
- Actively participate in the Public Theater’s ongoing cultural transformation practice.
- Identify ways to implement cultural transformation practices within departmental operations.
- Identify and share ideas for new systems and structures to improve collaboration and communication.
- Attend productions and readings both in-house and at sister theater companies.
- Uphold the Public Theater’s mission, vision, and core values.
- Perform other day-to-day duties as assigned, including coordination of new projects and initiatives.
Requirements
- Strong passion for new work development with professional experience in a theater company's artistic department.
- Experience in producing or project coordination within a theatrical setting.
- Experience reading new play and musical scripts and generating reports.
- Great organizational and time management skills, with the ability to track and support multiple projects and programs simultaneously.
- Demonstrated ability and commitment to working with diverse groups.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including cultural sensitivity and awareness.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain relationships with artists and create a welcoming environment.
- Effective and efficient verbal and written communication skills.
- A natural problem-solver who leads with curiosity.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
