About the Role
Ironsite is seeking its first VP of Platform Engineering to lead the engineering organization, owning technical direction, execution, and growth as the team scales significantly. This leadership role involves partnering with the CTO on technical strategy, product on development priorities, and the founding team on business decisions, while maintaining a hands-on approach to code reviews and architectural decisions.
Responsibilities
- Own the technical strategy for the engineering organization in partnership with the CTO.
- Set the architectural direction across platform, mobile, and infrastructure teams.
- Review meaningful PRs and architectural decisions across every engineering team.
- Contribute code weekly to critical fixes, new architectures, or alongside teams.
- Represent engineering in company-level strategic conversations.
- Own the engineering org design, including team structure, communication, decision-making, and workflow.
- Hire, mentor, and manage the engineering leadership team.
- Build the operating cadence for engineering, including planning, code review standards, technical rituals, and on-call practices.
- Set a culture that makes Ironsite a desirable workplace for engineers.
- Own the engineering delivery for the entire product surface, ensuring timely and quality releases.
- Drive delivery discipline to turn ambitious plans into shipped products.
- Own key organizational metrics: velocity, quality, reliability, and business impact.
- Scale the engineering org from approximately 30 to over 100 engineers within 18-24 months.
- Partner with recruiting and talent teams on hiring strategy, compensation, and candidate closing.
- Build career growth paths, performance frameworks, and internal mobility models.
- Partner with engineering, hardware, and product leadership on what the engineering org builds.
- Bring engineering judgment to pricing, packaging, and product strategy discussions.
- Represent engineering externally in customer conversations and partner meetings.
Requirements
- Deep full-stack expertise, comfortable owning a system end-to-end.
- Strong track record with API design, third-party integrations, and real-time data and analytics surfaces.
- Experience shipping web applications at scale, in production, with high reliability.
- Systems thinking that spans end-to-end product architecture and cross-team integration.
- Typically 8+ years of engineering experience, with meaningful time spent at a Staff/Principal level.
- 12+ years of engineering experience, with at least 5 years in senior engineering leadership roles (Director, VP, or Head of Engineering).
- Deep hands-on technical expertise across the modern web stack (React/TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, AWS).
- Track record of leading engineering organizations that scaled by orders of magnitude without losing technical bar or culture.
- Demonstrated leadership at scale, managing teams of at least 20-50 people, including managers.
- Strong track record of shipping systems that scaled by orders of magnitude in throughput, users, or data volume.
- Systems thinking that spans the full stack and the full org.
- Real ability to partner with founders, holding ground and improving the company.
- Background in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- Experience as the first or founding VP of Engineering at a Series A or B startup.
- Experience at a company combining hardware and software, or deploying software in industrial/field environments.
- Deep experience with data infrastructure, API design, third-party integrations, or real-time data and analytics surfaces.
- History of raising the bar around you, promoting engineers and building future leaders.
- Experience shipping products that worked reliably for non-technical users in real-world conditions.
- Experience with AI-adjacent engineering, especially at the seams between research and production.
- Genuine excitement about underserved industries and building the foundation for the physical world.

- Base salary: $300k-$375k per year
