About the Role
Support people through mental health challenges and help shape better lives across our borough. In this vital role, you’ll work directly with residents, offering care, guidance and crisis support that makes a real difference in their lives. Responsibilities
- Work directly with adults and young people experiencing mental health difficulties, considering whether a formal assessment under the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA) is required or if least restrictive options are available.
- Respond in a timely manner to MHA requests, manage risks, and liaise with partner agencies for intervention planning.
- Respond to urgent referrals requiring same-day assessment and intervention.
- Attend assessments and act independently in urgent, high-stakes situations.
- Complete statutory work in a timely manner.
- Attend court for s135(1) warrants.
- Ensure a team approach is applied and contribute to allocated work.
- Act as a Practice Assessor for AMHP Trainees and support newly qualified AMHPs.
- Liaise with partner agencies and provide guidance and support.
- Record information in a timely manner and escalate where necessary.
Requirements
- Registered Social Worker with Social Work England.
- Relevant qualifications and experience in adult mental health settings as an AMHP.
- Experience working with people facing a range of mental health challenges, including complex or enduring conditions.
- Understanding of how to balance rights, needs, and risks.
- Minimum of two years of practice as an AMHP with varied experience supporting people in crisis.
- Knowledge of MHA 1983 s13(1) statutory duties.
- Proficiency in Mental Health Act, Care Act, Mental Capacity Act, and Children’s Act legislation.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Clear communication skills.
- Empathetic approach.
- Comfortable working independently and as a team player.
- Value supervision and seek feedback.
- Treat every person with dignity and respect.
- Culturally sensitive, whole-person approach.
- Requires an Enhanced DBS with Adults and Child Barred List.

Salary/Compensations
- New hires will normally start at the minimum of the pay scale.
- A higher starting salary may be negotiated where a candidate demonstrates exceptional skills, knowledge, or experience.
- Employees receive annual salary increments until they reach the top of the pay scale, as well as any agreed cost of living pay awards.
