About the Role
Performs technical and/or non-technical duties in the laboratory for the proper and efficient operation of the Stat clinical laboratory, under the general supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor and the General Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Maintains a neat, clean, and efficient work area.
- Utilizes supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner.
- Arranges priorities, especially for requests that must have very short TAT.
- Follows Hospital and Laboratory policies for Safety, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment and Chemicals.
- Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
- Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
- Performs a variety of laboratory procedures under the direction of Director, Supervisor, or Assistant Supervisor.
- Performs laboratory tests alone or with minimum supervision.
- Operates and maintains automated instruments and other laboratory equipment based on departmental standard of operation.
- Maintains inventory of supplies and other related laboratory materials.
- Maintains good record-keeping through the computer and/or book where applicable.
- Learns new tests or methodologies and runs special tests.
- Performs related and unrelated duties assigned, such as preparing solutions, cleaning laboratory glassware, or taking patients' blood.
- Assists supervisor in training students and trainees in laboratory work and may supervise technicians in the absence of the supervisor.
- Performs or learns laboratory computer operations, including specimen accessioning, test request logging, daily log printing, manual result entry, result editing and posting, report printing, and report retrieval.
- Evaluates, troubleshoots, researches, and resolves day-to-day problems or special projects as assigned by the section supervisor.
- Exercises duties consistent with the needs of all patients regardless of age.
- Understands, follows, and implements Hospital policies for confidentiality of patient and employee records.
- Exhibits good customer relations skills.
- Maintains records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Performs all other duties as required.
Requirements
- Requires a minimum formal education of Bachelor's Degree.
- Requires a minimum of 1 year of job-related experience.
- Desired: BS Chemistry or Biology.
- Desired: 2 years Clinical Chemistry Laboratory experience.
- Desired: Current NY State Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
