About the Role

This Correctional Officer Lieutenant position is located at Jackson Correctional Institution and involves supervising Correctional Officers and Sergeants, serving as the initial commander during emergencies, and functioning as the facility manager during non-administrative hours.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants.
  • Serves as the initial commander during emergency situations.
  • Functions as facility manager during non-administrative hours.
  • Plans, organizes, and coordinates the activities of all Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants assigned to a shift.
  • Delegates post assignments and specific duty assignments.
  • Coordinates leave use and ensures accurate completion of attendance and leave reports.
  • Works with employees to ensure proper security coverage.
  • Conducts periodic individual counseling with staff.
  • May take or recommend disciplinary action.
  • Supervises searches for contraband.
  • Makes daily inspections of buildings and grounds.
  • Inspects physical plant for security concerns and sanitation standards.
  • Circulates throughout the institution observing officers’ performance.
  • Conducts performance evaluations.
  • Schedules and/or coordinates training programs for subordinates.
  • Conducts continuous training of subordinate staff in security procedures.
  • Supervises and coordinates body cavity searches.
  • Authorizes non-emergency applications of use of force.
  • Supervises inmates based on their risk level.
  • Manages inmate housing areas.
  • Enforces rules and sanitation standards for inmates.
  • Transports inmates using approved restraints and observing relevant laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Conducts accurate head counts.
  • Maintains custody and control over inmates during appointments outside the secured perimeter.
  • Escorts inmates within the secured perimeter.
  • Performs crisis intervention functions, including restraining violent inmates and preventing escapes.
  • Provides emergency assistance during emergencies, disasters, and accidents.
  • Conducts inspections and surveillance of persons, property, vehicles, buildings, and outdoor areas.
  • Physically checks doors, windows, gates, and other areas to ensure proper security.
  • Attends mandatory and other training.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have completed the basic recruit training course for correctional officers.
  • Must have one year of experience as a certified officer with the State of Florida.
  • Must not have received a suspension within the past 12 months.
  • Must not have received an involuntary demotion within the past 24 months.
  • Must not have received less than a 3.00 rating on a performance evaluation within the past 3 fiscal years.
  • Current FDC employees will be considered.
